I just bought the 899 and love mine. Glad I got the bigger screen. You can see more in SI and RTS. If you can afford I would go for the 899. I am saving for one more for the front of my boat.

Trying to figure out what unit to go with for upfront trolling motor mount. Really would like to go with side and down and 1 transducer which would be a Humminbird unit. Looking at 598-698 or 899 units. Sure would like a bigger screen but looks like 300 or more bucks to go with the 899. A Ram-mount will help bring unit up closer to see I would think?? I am guessing a split screen view on 598 or 698 would be awful small. I will take any advise I can get, thanks.

yes.
A simple yes.

If you take a 5" screen at full screen SI ... Then split that view as left and right SI ...
That makes about 2.25" for the left SI view and 2.25" for right SI view ...
Then take up 10-50% of each separate 2.25" SI side for the water column ...
Even at a "SI Range" setting of 20ft the SI image is only going to display 1-1.5" of bottom detail on each side of the SI image...(unless using the Contour mode)...
Horizontal screen resolution (size) = better SI viewing ...
Vertical screen resolution (size) = better 2d and DI viewing ...
If the budget is tight ...and you're not in a great hurry, I agree with Rees ... Wait for the new 2015 "wide format" Helix units ...

Unless you got super eye sight, get the big screen, you will be glad you did. A friend is a true computer geek and has an 899 but has made some modifications so we can view it on a tablet PC as well. Major difference. So I cannot imagine going smaller. This is a case where Bigger is Better.........

I would be willing to bet a VC 1 | Cables | 720054-1
is involved in the "modification". You don't need a computer. All you need is a TV with RCA inputs. I have thought about this myself but the problems is purchasing a sun light view-able TV for less then a 11" locator. Or option two is only use the TV at night.
