You really cant go wrong with Lowrance or Humminbird. For Downimagine I personnally like Lowrance better.

    Lowrance Elite 4 DSI ... :

    DI (455kHz/800kHz)
    Chartplotting
    320 x 240 3.5" color display

    _________________

    Humminbird 581i HD DI ... :

    2d (455kHz/200kHz)
    DI (455kHz/800kHz)
    Chartplotting
    320 x 640 5" monochrome display

Some people find DI as a "replacement" for 2d...Lowrance choice
Some people find DI as an "compliment" to 2d...Humminbird choice

Besides having numerous features with a low price, I really like a unit like the Humminbird 581i because with it's Quick Disconnect mounting bracket - I can move it from my boat, to my car, to an ATV or a snowmobile, ice house, etc. Also have found out that Humminbird's customer service is second to none.

Just get one and when you do you need to learn how to use it and i would bet that either one will do the job. Sorry to sound like a 1st grade teacher there but that makes a big difference on what you will get out of it in the end. I have some buddies and they have a good depth finder but they should have bought a thermometer and tied it to a piece of fishing line and drop it over the side and tie a rope to a rock and mark the rope in 1 foot increments because that is all they look at--water temp and water depth. I will get off my soapbox now!

If I were choosing between those 2 it would be the Hummer, bigger screne being the reason, both do a good job.
