    Default HB 858C DI problem-help

Hey guys. Got out on the water Saturday for the first time in too long(5 months). Everything was going good, meaning everything was running good (not catching much) but working. About the fifth time I turned my 858 on up front (tm mount) my DI was working but graph was not. I turned it off and on several more times but all I got was DI. Sonar showed a light line at surface and the rest was just white. No bottom or anything in between. All of the read outs were fine and was giving fine DI views. Any suggestions? I played with some of the settings, but never got anything out of it. Thanks for any help.

Could be settings out if whack...(I'm thinking the "Lower Range" in the Sonar Xpress menu)...

Try Restore Defaults under the Setup tab...

If you don't want to lose your other settings...open the Xpress menu while on the Sonar view and make sure to set the "Upper Range" and "Lower Range" to "Auto"...

If that doesn't get it ...post back...

Still nothing on the graph. Reset to factory default and no change. I didn't think it would help since I haven't touched any settings in quite some time. It was working fine for the first three hours on the water, then nothing. I didn't bang the transducer on anything, no twist or cuts in transducer cable. The unit is just 13 months old. Question: can I hook my 998 up to the di transducer to check it out to see if a head unit issue or transducer issue?

I have a 958 and had routed the cable up thru and along the shaft of my terrova. Apparently it had wound itself to tight and I lost the regular 2d first then later in the week I lost the DI. New TD and it all worked perfect again. One more thought, I have also cut thru the TD cable with my braid fishing line, it just looked like a nick however it had cut one of the wires. Both my fault! Been thinking about buying TD by the dozen.LOL

Thanks Redge. Anyone know of a good source for td's. Or is HB my only source for td only?
Can I hook a 998 up to a di only td just to make sure that's the problem before I buy one?

Another silly question while I'm at it. Which td do I need? I have it on tm using a transducer shield/saver, but I've noticed they offer a tm td now. So either one better? From what I can tell, I either need the XNT 9 20 T with transducer shield or the XTM 9 Wide DI 20 T. I need all the help I can get...frustrated...

I doubt this would give any results that could be used for diagnosing the issue...your DI unit uses 455kHz/200kHz for the 2d and your 998 uses 83kHz/200kHz for the 2d...

Did you sign up for the HB Select at purchase that gives you 2 years warranty...??...(if you did just call HB 1-800-633-1468)...

Check with our board sponsors...they can beat the HB website price anyway...

Your choices for a DI xducer that will work on the 858c DI are...:

    *XNT 9 DI T (455kHz/200kHz 2d and 455kHz/800kHz DI)...needs TM adapter bracket
    *XTM 9 WIDE DI 20 T (83kHz/ 200kHz 2d and 455kHz/800kHz DI)...TM puck style already...

    (The XNT 9 20 T is a Dual Beam 2d xducer...it doesn't have a DI piezo)...

    Stickman,
You could try connecting your 858c DI unit up to your 998’s transducer (not the other way around) for testing just to see if the problem is in the unit or the transducer. It won’t be perfect but you should be able to get 2D sonar and DI sonar readings - be sure and have the “Beam Select” menu on the “200kHz” setting so the 2D sonar will work.

Forgot to mention that you will need to change the “Connected Transducer” menu to the “DI 200/83” menu setting for the above test.

The transducer was the problem, actually I think it was the cable. Got a new one today, plugged it up, and got sonar signal. Now to mount it and re run the cable so I won't have this problem again. Scissor mounts and cables don't mix! We'll see if I can get it right this time. Expensive screw ups suck! I'm just proud it is the td/cable and not the head unit.
