    Default learning very slowly

Went yesterday. Played with electronics most of the day. I am trying to learn to read 2D without "little fishies". Noticed DI worked best at speeds of between 3 and 6 MPH. The 2D and DI both showed thin lines, indicating bottom softness. Some of the 2D readings showed spots with yellow middles, I guess indicating a hard reading but not an actual arch. I am determined to learn how to read 2D without the fish icons. I still have a ways to get there, but I am having fun. Any tips would be appreciated.......Thanks....crappie1133

I don't know what brand sonar you have, but it's cool to run the di and 2d sonar at the same time.this way You can see what the image is on di, and it will help teach you to intercept you 2d sonar. Also, ( at least on the humminbirds) run the image speed the same as your boat speed ( trolling at 2 mph, scroll speed 2) good luck, and keep practicing with it!

You are not alone.......I struggle with the 2d readings, I am running 858c DI and 998 HD SI units. I run the DI and the 2d at the same time....

I have been using all the youtube vids I can find that are actual instructal based but it hard for me also.

Brn2fish has given you some good advice!! Hours on the water will help pull it altogether in your brain. At least that is what has helped me. The running DI and 2D side by side will show you a lot!!

Brn2fsh , I have a Elite 7HDI that I use in split screen, side by side and over and under. Helps with comparisions and helps with interpretations. I guess I wonder sometimes when comparing DI to 2D do I have the boat speed right. It seems to give a better picture when the boat is moving between 3 and 5 MPH. Another question is do I have the settings right and am, I getting the maxium from this unit???? This bothers me more on DI than 2D. There is no way to say the unit is working the way it was designed to do. Thanks for your comments. I will keep on trying . Hope you and family have a great Christmas..... crappie1133

I don't know much about the lowrance ( hb and Lowrance both make good stuff) but if it transfers over, on a hb, if I'm moving at 2 mph, I set the scroll speed on mine at "2". I'm sure the Lowrance guys have videos on YouTube about this, I'd look there to be sure. As for sensitivity, you just need to slowly increase it till you get a crisp clear picture. Too much sensitivity will get big blobs on the screen, the tricky part is that you can get your unit dialed in, and the next place you move to might require a different sensitivity setting. Examples would be mud to rock bottoms, weeds, clam beds, these all have different densities, and would probably require different sensitivity settings. I generally leave my sensitivity setting alone unless I am really looking for something in particular. If your unit has a simulation mode, I'd bring it in, I'd practice with it while you're not on the water, you'll have more patience with it and you'll get quicker in changing to the screens you want and in making adjustments, so you'll have more time fishing

You are already doing about the best thing you can do. Spend time on the water so when you are fishing your electronics are tools, not time consumers.
