I have a 998 SI and a 858 DI HD. Aside from the numerous features that I am still learning to use and decipher the only real "at a glance" difference is that the HD 858 screen can be seen clearly in bright sunlight. The 998 will need a tilt adjustment occasionally to make the screen more visible.

Funding available, I would only buy HD.

Tom ... according to all the discussions I've read on it, the "difference" is a couple hundred dollars for LED backlighting vs CCFL backlighting (so, as "tsaints1115" says ... you can view it better in direct sunlight).

Just bought one of the non HD units. Only difference is the back lighting which is supposed to brighten the screen. And I think but not positive maybe you can make the readout numbers smaller on the HD. Wasn't worth the extra dollars for me as a few places have the non HD on sale for 1295.00

The only difference is the LED backlighting on the "HD" model.
All other feature and menu changes are a result of software updates that both the "HD" and non-HD models can get (both use the same software update).

Only problem I had with the 997 I once owned was the donut. Looks like that issue is resolved. It has become nearly impossible for me to connect the multiple cables to the HDS. The HB has a easy to connect plug. This is my major consideration. I am not cry babying, but I fell recently and ruptured the ligament in both my wrists when I tried to brace the fall. I have balance issues as some of you know. Just resolving some of my elderly issues.

If it is just background lighting, why is it tagged as HD? Kinda confusing and misleading to me.

HB used a similar concept (of adding the HD moniker) when previously renaming the "7xx Combo" series units to the now "7xx HD Combo" series units...
(That particular HD moniker name change indicated "Ethernet capability"...not screen resolution..)

I think most folks automatically relate "HD vs non-HD" into thinking about televisions where a "HD" television would give a better picture than a "non-HD" television ...(and this is why the question frequently arises about if a "HD" unit will give a better image than a "non-HD" unit...)

I guess HB decided it was just easier to say "998c HD SI Combo" ...than "998c SI Combo With LED Backlight Screen"...

It's curious that HB has yet to Label the flagship 1198 with a "HD" moniker....

I wonder if they are waiting for some future hardware change in the 11xx series to add "HD" to it also...??
