Whats the difference between down imaging and dual beam,and which is better

dual beam is a unit that can send out both 83 and 200 signals, there is a option in the menu to select one or the other, can't use both at the same time and commonly rerferred to as 2d. Down imaging is a newer type and will give you picture like images on the HU screen with much more detail than 2d will. You will think you're looking at a photograph of the lake bottom with down imaging, the detail is very good. Look in the electronics forum for some pics to see the differences between the two.

This is "Dual Beam" ...2d has "cone shaped" sound pulse beams which render a "cartoon-like" screen image...
"Cone-shaped" beams are good for sitting on top of brush ....because the beam is bigger in all directions to help keep the structure inside the cone to display on the screen..."


This is "DI" ...DI has "thin slice shaped" sound pulse beams which render a "picture-like" screen image...
"Thin-slice" beams are good for passing over structure and getting a good detailed image of what that structure down there really looks like...

On the DI pictures in your post ... it shows the boat running over the tree from bottom to top, but shows the DI image as a "side view" of the tree. What image would the DI show if you ran over that tree from one side to the other ?? Does the unit "turn" the image to a semi-3d format on the screen ... or are the two pics even related (and not just a mfg ad promo) ??

Are you meaning if the boat ran over the tree from the side instead of down the length (bottom to top)? Instead of showing the main trunk first and the branches after it, they would all show at about the same time. Well… the outside branches would start showing first (and last) but the main part of the tree would all show together; perhaps as a short looking tree or a big bush.

Making those “picture-like” images takes moving over the structure at the right angle same as taking a picture with a camera requires you to be at the right angle.

With the Humminbird DI units you get both the DI and 2D sonar (with two frequencies for each).

Just to add a little to what Greg said...

The screen orientation view of DI is the same as a 2d screen..

The processor does, indeed turn that sonar ping info around and plot it on the screen...the water's surface at the top of the display and the lake bottom at the bottom of the display...

Using a simple analogy of an aquarium....:

Place a toy boat on the water in the aquarium ...

The toy boat's Xducer is actually be "looking" (pinging) down into the aquarium...

The unit's processor will rearrange that ping data and plot that ping data on the unit's display screen as if you were looking in thru the side of the aquarium...

It does this so your "mind's eye" can get a visual understanding of water depth...

Ricky Im new to this crappie fishing.Ive always cast small spinners and crankbait for panfish but ive rigged my boat for spider rigging and I want a depth finder that will help me know what and where to fish.Thanks for the tips so far.
