Now you'll know which direction your boat is pointed.

Actually more likely, you'll know that you're pointed at that waypoint that you're traveling towards.

I think Stymie's analogy here will possibly be the benefit to slow trollers....

When my "boat shaped" icon changes to the "Donut" below 0.6mph...the "Donut" does not just stop moving on the chart...

The "Donut" jumps in small increments on the map every 1-2 seconds as the boat moves on the water....

This is understandable as the boat has drifted enough distance on the water for the GPS receiver to see a different lat & lon coordinate from where it was ...then the unit updates the "Donut" icon position on the chart view to the newly recognized lat & lon coordinate...

With the AS GPS HS antenna, the "boat shaped" icon will still jump in small increments on the chart view every 1-2 seconds as the boat moves on the water....(just like the donut does)...

But also.... the AS GPS HS antenna will allow the unit to show on the chart view if my boat is pointed toward the "blue dot" waypoint, south of the "blue dot" waypoint, east of the "blue dot" waypoint, etc...

This feature of the "boat shaped" icon telling me which way my boat is "pointing" in relation to where the "blue dot" is on the chart should make it possible to realize which way I need to adjust my boat direction to "head" toward the "blue dot"...

So, what this means is....

The AS GPS HS antenna may not allow my unit to show a steady constant tracking line of the boat's path (like the Lowrance does)....It will allow to me know which way I should adjust my slow trolling path to reach my destination...that next "blue dot" waypoint on the chart view...

We will know more when I get this thing in my hands where I can test it...
(I can assure all that I will order 1 as soon as HB puts that "Add to Cart" button on the website....)

Digital magnetic compass. Good deal. Nice thing about a digital compass is that the heading is always present. I doesn't need to be "refreshed" to know where north is or what direction you are headed. Garmin has/had some digital magnetic compasses in their handhelds. Worked good.

The gps compass is accurate, is a true 360* compass, but must be refreshed, and, unlike magnetic compasses, it is not too affected by its environment. As long as you have gps signal, you have compass.

I noticed in the HB pdf that the digital compass has 1-2 degree accuracy. A target in 15 foot of water and 3 foot diameter is an easy target to locate at trolling speeds with this accuracy.

I have used the Hitachi H55 digital magnetic compass in projects. It had 2* accuracy, but at slow speeds and short distances, that is accurate.

If you really want to solve the issue... you will need a solid state compass like: Maretron : Marine Electronic Instruments

I finally bit the bullet last year and bought one of these along with their GPS200and could not be more happy. I use it with my Lowrance HDS Gen 1&2 system. Now if we could only have consistent GPS accuracy.
