    Default Humminbird GPS problem

Help? I got a HB 581i for Christmas and I have installed it on the bow of my boat. The boat icon (on the GPS screens) wanders wildly. The boat is sitting still, on the trailer, and the boat icon moves around as much as several hundred feet in every direction. The speed readout reads anywhere from 0.3 to 1.4 mph. I did send HB an email about it, but I'm afraid they may be off for the Holidays. Anyone know anything about this?

Do you have the latest update installed? You should register your unit and check on what update you have and install the latest if it is not on it already.
That would be my first thing to start with.

it sounds to me like your GPS is searching for sat's and is getting locks on a few of them , question is your boat sitting outside in a area with a good clear veiw of the sky ?

You are correct short grub; the GPS receiver within the 581i unit needs to be able to ‘see’ the GPS satellites for it to work.

Shadboy, go to the Views menu tab and set the GPS Diagnostic View to “Visible”. Use the VIEW (or EXIT) button to go to this View and let us know what it shows for the “Fix Type”, “HDOP” and “Est Pos Error” numbers.

Switched the head unit out for another one. The new one seems to work properly.
