998 going off by itself, any reasons , or help?

My 998 will work fine most of the time, but at times it will cut itself off, some trips it does not do it and others seems like it all day.
it seem to go off more when I am runnign the big motor..

Any ideals?

Check your power plug. It may be loose fitting. I just had to change mine because the connection wasn't holding tight anymore. Would just slide out. Bracket wouldn't even hold it in. Got to be really annoying so i bought a new power cord. No problem since then.

A bad connection somewhere causing to lose power.

Either a bad connection or low battery.

Could also be a failing voltage regulator on your outboard. They will shut off if battery voltage is too low or too high.

Check all of the electrical connections between the power cable and the battery the unit is powered from. Don’t forget to check the fuse and fuse connections too. Anything that is loose or corroded can cause problems. It is best to have the 998c Si unit on its own set of wires that run straight back to the battery (through an in-line fuse).

Check the battery as well. I had an intermittent problem like this once except that I figured out that I only lost power when I hit a wave. Turns out that one of the terminals in the battery had broken loose and would lose contact when hitting a wave.

Next I would check that the power cable is being held firmly in the Connector Collector.

Lastly I would try slightly bending the gold pins on the power cable away from each other. I mean slightly here as it does not take much, in fact you may not even be able to see that they are bent at all it takes so little.

Do what Greg says and if still a problem go back and look at the inline fuse, I had a weak spring in my in line fuse and a good bump or so it would lose contact inside for a split second and no power to unit, I finally ended up replacing inline fuse with the blade type like u have in cars --never had problem after that......

Thanks for the suggestions , I am sure the voltage is good, and I have wires ran directly to the battery from the 998, will check all my connections and the fuse tomorrow.. some times its liek Gerweg said when the ride gets bumpy it goes off.. I guess makes sense might be a bad connection.or the inline fuse like jaxsprat said.. thanks .

If it was a failing voltage regulator wouldn't I see the high or low voltage on the 998, I have the voltage on my display,.. and best I remember its always been close to 12 volts.

Not sure what type of connectors you used, but if they are crimp type I would seriously consider soldering them and then coating them with liquid electrical tape. I had all sorts of of weird electronics issues until I ran seperate wires with soldered connections. It might be overkill but I haven't had problems since.

I also ran some heavier gauge wire from the battery, and just used about 12" of the Humminbird power cable at the unit. The heavier wire prevents the voltage drop in the wire.

And make sure the fuse is close to the battery! Found that out the hard way years ago...
