I read sometimes about " the best depthfinders". I had a Garmin 160, good depthfinder.I had a Lowrance x 510C, good depthfinder. When I decided to upgrade. I asked , researched, talked to others, and made comparisions. I decided on a Lowrance HDS 7 gen 2 with gps. My first venture in to the gps world.Good depthfinder. There were some features I liked over others.. I like the new Garmen Echo 550c, I like Humminbirds. When I was learning and getting familar I with the new HDS . I had to call Lowrance tech. service. They were very helpful and even thanked me for buying their depthfinder. They were very good at walking me through menues and offering tips on use. I am sure Humminbird and Garmon are the same. They are all amazing depthfinders. My biggest problem is learning to read what the finder is trying to tell my old brain. There is a huge learning curve with these units and it takes a long time to really understand what you have spent all of that money for.

The HDS units are great depth finders. My advise is get out on the lake and use it, when you find something drop a line down and bump around. I have a gallon zip lock bag with the owners manuals, screen cloth and a small note book in the dry storage in my boat. I have the basic settings for the unit and short cut notes written down, this way if I get it out of whack I can go back to my initial settings easily. If you really want to know whats down there buy a LSS-1 or 2.
There are two great forums on Bass Boat Centeral, Lowrance/Garmin Sonar/GPS and Lowrance Image Interpretation. You will find a ton of information there.
The more you use it, the easier it will become. The more you look at it, the more you will understand.
There are fishing guides out there that will take you out for a day of just on-the-water electronics education. A guy I work with just spent two days on Kentucky Lake with a guide learning the ins and out of the new Lowrance SI and DI technologies.
