    Default Fishfinder Question

I did some searching on the forum and really enjoyed this article by Jerry Blake: http://www.crappie.com/crappie/main-...hangy-etc.html

    Newbie Fishfinder Question:

If my boat is only 15 feet long, and the transducer is on the transom, and I am fishing from the front of the boat going less than 1MPH (troll motor), how and where would I cast out to get to the fish?

I can see the fish arches, but they seem to go off the screen pretty fast.

    I have a Humminbird 561.

    Thanks guys!

With the transducer mounted on the transom, anything you see will be under the transducer or behind the boat – depending on where it is located on the display. Really can’t get any more specific as there are many variables to take into account for this.

    Thanks for your response.

With that, then I would just presume that I have to fish some deeper water, to have the Sonar Cone under the front part of the boat. OR hit the reverse and go back where I saw some fish :-)

You could set-up a second station on your bow. Than using only the 200kHz 20 degree sonar beam; what you see on the right side of the display would be almost directly under the transducer…

Thanks so much for your help. sounds like a lot more upgrade to that fishfinder than i wanted to spend.
I am wondering if it would make sense to mount it in the middle of the boat floor and submerse in the water.

You sound very knowledgable and I'm appreciative of your thoughts.

Keeping my set up like it is, would I just throw out a buoy behind the boat where I saw the structure/fish and then circle back?

Here is a depiction of the Dual Beam Plus in your 561...Fish and/or structure have to be in the sonar beam cone shape to show on the screen...

Throw a marker buoy out to the side of the xducer as soon as the target echo shows on the screen...Then swing around and fish near the buoy...

Remember to try and toss the marker buoy off to the side (and upwind) when marking a piece of structure...

    This accomplishes 2 things;

*Less likely to spook fish from the structure...
*Allows you to position the boat downwind of the structure and the buoy itself not be in the way of fishing the structure...

Another way to fish with the set up you currently have is to longline or troll for crappie. You mentioned your speed of 1mph using the trolling motor, which is a good speed to start out at, and adjust the speed up or down. Do a search for longlining and you should come up with some advice and tips for this method of fishing.
    GO BIG ORANGE !

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.
