    Default trolling motor quit!!!

Went fishing today and trolling motor foot pedal slipped and motor would not turn in any direction. It was free wheeling. Can I fix it or do I need to replace. The manual is not much help. Thanks

I imagine the cable came lose or broke. It can be fixed in most cases.

I presume (dangerous to assume) you have a cable driven TM. If so, take the top cover off the head of the TM. It is a pretty simple rack and pinion type mechanism. I would guess either the rack gears or the pinion gear that is on the TM shaft have stripped, or the cable itself has broken. First thing to look at is the cable connection at the foot pedal and make sure the cable is still connected to the pedal, then go to the head of the TM. Should not be too difficult to fix, unless you are looking for and excuse to buy a new one, then it is impossible to fix.

i have had cables break and replaced them, i am assuming it is a minn kota and you will have a left and a right cable, they are roughly $20 a piece. it is easy to replace, take the old ones out pull them out of the long cable housing that runs from the motor head to the foot, next loosen the tension on the foot and put the appropriate cable in each slot then run them back through the long cable housing to the motor head then wrap them around the pulley and but the ends in the lots. now tighten the tension back at the foot. motortechva.com is a good place to get what you need and get help too.
