If you have the 597c DI unit you do not have to have the pc cable. You can update the unit software via a SD card and Card Reader. You can download the software update for the unit to an SD card and then place the SD card in the unit and the unit will read the update.

You would need to follow the on screen prompt regarding replacing the current software in the unit (Yes, right cursor) Then you get asked do you want to abort the update (No, Left Cursor) and then the update would progress.

Thanks for the info Deborah. I have the 596c HD di which does not have the card slot so I would need to purchase the AS-PC3 cable in order to do any updates. I called Humminbird this morning and explained the issue in regard to the down imaging. I took it out again last night just to test the unit. Restoring the factory defaults did help which I don't really understand because I've honestly not had the luxury of taking it out much or changing the settings. (18 hours on unit), I had to turn the DI sensitivity up to the max of 20 in order to see anything at all. I've tried this unit on 3 different lakes all with the same result. I also noticed last night that if I set the unit to 800kHz, the down imaging display goes completely black. The 2D sonar works great. I've only used the unit in 40ft of water max. Most ranges are 10ft-30ft.

After talking to the rep I asked about it maybe being the transducer. He stated he didn't think that was it and asked that I send the unit back to be looked at. I hate to send it back but that's what they suggested.

There are times when the 455kHz beam will work better than the 800kHz beam...

A very soft mud bottom will not reflect as much sonar as a hard bottom ... So maxing the sensitivity on the 800 kHz beam still may not reflect enough sonar to get an acceptable image..

Depth also plays a factor in this as deeper water absorbs more of the sonar sound wave...

It is not abnormal for the 800kHz beam to not work well in deeper water with soft bottoms...

Does your unit get better brighter images on a "known" gravel bottom...?? (which reflects sonar much better)...
