Small battery for HB798?

Would a lawnmower battery be sufficient to run a HB 798 only? Just curious. I know they want you to run a direct line to the battery.

You can use any 12 volt battery source. Just note the amp hours and the power draw on the unit, the more amps the battery has the longer you will be able to run the unit before needing to recharge it, if the unit is only item running off the battery. The 798 draws @ 615 mA/ hr

I picked-up 2- Hummingbird 7AH AGM batteries (with chargers) last year for around $50 on Amazon, but I see they've went-up in price (with everything else). I use one for my FF and another for my Reel-Lite.

If you can, get the AGMs (as opposed to lead acid), they can mount in any position, and don't out-gas when charging. I have over 1000AH of AGMs for the PV Solar Bank in my Bus.

You can get these AGM rechargeable 12v batteries online for super cheap. They are used for alarm systems, rc car starters, ups, etc. Look here (no affiliation but have done lots of business with these guys, highly recommended!) Sealed Lead Acid Batteries. As others have said, find the current draw of the unit in amp-hours, then match it to the battery that provides the capacity you need. I.e. if your unit draws 0.5 ah, an 8 amp battery would provide 16 hours of use. I recommend adding 20% to your required capacity to account for the variances in batteries. So, if you want to use a 0.5 ah unit for 8 hours without recharge, you would need a 16 ah battery + 20% (16 x 1.2) = 19.2 ah.

There is the option to use your trolling motor battery as well, but you need to use an inline noise suppressor. You can find these for pretty cheap online, at Best Buy, etc. They are typically sold as car stereo amplifier noise filters and they simply go inline with the positive lead.

I use AGM electric wheel chair or scooter batteries. I get 35-40 AMP/HR for around $55-60. Fantastic shelf life, and they last forever while in use. I use one to run a 50 lb thrust motorguide trolling motor, and it never let me down - lasts all day.

Pretty cheap for an AGM battery. Most I seen were over 100 bucks in that ah range. I got a powersonic 35 sla for 50 bucks.

Keep in mind you can't use 100% of the battery. A 50% or less discharge will prolong battery life. Deep repeated discharges will kill a battery as quick as anything, there are so many cycles (discharge/recharge) in them.

That is what I plan. So how many amp battery would be sufficient for say 8 hrs usage per trip? Not too knowledgeable about batteries. I was thinking of using an AGM type or Sealed lead acid type.
