The water clarity and the bottom composition will play a big factor in the effectiveness of 800kHz beam...
Clear water and a hard bottom will reflect sonar echoes better than dirty water and mud bottoms...
I have seen good bright images in the 800kHz beam in 70ft depths of a hard bottom...
I have seen dark undescernable images in 20ft depths of soft mud bottoms.....
This is why I constantly change the SI sensitivity setting as I fish..
Raising SI sensitivity brightens the image..
Lowering the SI sensitivity darkens the image...
Bottom composition can change from mud to gravel to sand in the length of the boat...
SI sensitivity is "the most often used setting" on my unit..
The only time I ever change to 455 kHz beam is in deeper water with softer bottoms that just "will not" reflect enough sonar to get a satisfactory SI image...
