Check the battery's charge...
You might even try a different battery...
These units have a low voltage safety that makes them do funny things when there is not enough voltage...

I've got a Humminbird 718, and when I powered up yesterday, it was dead when I got into the boat. Pushed the power button, nothin. wiggled the wires, nothing.
Pulled the unit back off and it came on as soon as I put it back, without pushing the power button. Three seconds later, it shuts off, and won't come back on. It shows the power down in 2 seconds display and goes out. When I got home, I messed with it, and went through the same scenario, and it came on for like three minutes and then done the same thing, and after dark, I noticed all the buttons were lit up but the screen was blank and none of the buttons worked. Any ideas? Thanks.

I had a Lowrance that did this and I killed the power for 15 or 20 sec. That fixed it. I also had a HB that would lock up when my battery was down a little then tried to crank the outboard. Cutting the power like stated will fix many problems. This worked on many of my electronic devises. Learned this from my son who works in electronics.
Trump is like the guy that comes on the playground and beats up on the guys that's been pushing you around for the last 30 or 40 years.
I had some issues like this--ended up when I mount the unit I wasn't seating it properly to get 100% connection to the power wire.
Check all of the electrical connections between your 718 unit and the battery it is powered off of as well. Don’t forget to check the fuse and fuse holder. Any loose or corroded connection can rob the unit of the power it needs to work right.
You may also try swapping units with someone else that runs a Humminbird unit to see if the problem is in your unit or your boat. This can be done with the boat on the trailer.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Apparently, the power button was stuck "depressed" and I got my fingernails under neath it and pulled it back out a few times and it has started working again.![]()
