    Default TM shaft too long

I have a 24v MG Brute I love. Its on a 16' All weld BB I aquired a 14' crappie boat I'd like to use it on but the shaft is too long. Can it be shortenend in the backyard? Will it have to go to a machine shop?
    Thanks
    Fin

You can cut the shaft at home if you are competent with tools and pay attention to details. Why do you want to shorten it? Won't it work the way it is? I you do decide to cut it yourself, use a tubing cutter, not a hacksaw. Gives a much better finish and no worries about cutting wires. Good luck.

As jigfinder says "You can do it yourself" but let me give you a few words of advice.
If you are not very electrically inclined you might want to take it somewhere, you will have to either disconnect the wires in the head or at the motor, and some of the motors are sealed and require additional work to reseal them so theres no leaks which would fry it almost immediatly. When removeing the head on handle cotrolled TM - some of them require you to remove a pin in the handle that attaches a stator that tells the motor how fast to turn - make sure that you mark it where its at befor removing or your motor will not run right or lose power.
I think I would look at either trying to raise the motor up on the mounting bracket or another way, alot of them have adjustable shafts to.

Can it be done...yes. Have I done it...yes. Do I wish I would have just sold the thing and bought another motor after going through all the mess in the garage...yes.

Speaking from personal experience shortening a metal-shafted Motorguide I would take the above advice and either adjust the depth of the lower unit to suit your needs, find a TM repair shop to do it (get a quote first $$$) or sell your current one and find you a new or good used one that will work out for you.

It's a stainless foot controlled 24v brute infinite speed.
The motor is for a larger 18' v bottom not a14' flat bottom. There's a little more involved than cutting 1 pipe. There's a ball bearing.
Tubing cutter is a good idea. I've had the head off.
Do I need to remove the pipe from the lower unit cut it rethread it then reinstall the pipe? I don't think cutting the top will work.

It needs to be cut at the top.

I have one now that was cut off, I could not find a die to re-thread the bottom so it was cut off at the top. The length need was not offered so there was no option except for it to stick up in the way or cut it off. Mine was a press fit into the bearing ring at the top, the best I remember it was cut off about 8 inches and pressed back into the ring with a bolt to hold it. It took a while but it was worth it!
