Finally going to pull the trigger on a down imaging unit this summer.
I'm still on the fence between the Elite 5x DSI and the HB 596 HD DI.
Not interested in GPS, Ive got a handheld that is much more accurate, and allows me to take my way points with me in my buddies boats.
I'm having trouble deciding on a setup. I want to have DI and regular sonar, so the choice seemed obvious: the humminbird. Then I realized I could get an Elite 5x DSI and a Mark 5x for the same price as the HB (the DSI is on sale for 400).
This would avoid splitting a small 5 inch screen, and would allow 5 inches dedicated to both down imaging and sonar. It'd be nice to have a full 10 inches of screen to look at. I've got the room on the console, and it might look pretty bad ram mounted side by side.
I don't mind the install or power consumption.
Anyone have any input on this? Are the scrolls speeds similar on Mark and Elite DSI units?
Any reason I should be going with the HB? I know the HB has more pixels, which is sort of tempting...

I've read just about that entire thread, but thanks. I'm a long time lurker.
I'm more or less looking for info about using the Mark 5x and the Elite DSI together.
it doesn't protain to the thread but does the dye in your username refer to the paintball company
I don't know what frequencies those 2 units run at but you had better check to be sure or you could get a lot of cross unit interference if the transducers are close enough to each other.
I was thinking along those same lines, Kenny. But, I think the interference comes from having the power lines close to each other, rather than the transducers (doesn't it) ... though I do see where the pings could get caught by the opposite unit. I have had interference from two Eagle/Lowrance units, even though one transducer was on the transom & the other on the trolling motor (17ft apart), on a friends boat.
My current boat has a 2d HB unit (in dash mount) and a Lowrance E5DSI on the trolling motor (which replaced a Eagle StrataView 128) .... and have seen no intereference in either case.

Both (or either)...
I think any time sonar beams of the same frequency overlap in the water column...this can cause what is called "cross-talk" interference...where 1 unit is actually picking up the same frequency sound waves sent out by the other unit...
It will usually show up on the screen at the depth where the 2 sonar beam overlap in the water column....
I have even heard of instances where 2 separate boats running the same frequency beam picked up this "cross talk" interference when the 2 boats were close enough together for their respective sonar beams to overlap...

The two units don't run the same frequency, and from what I've heard on other sites, they don't interfere with eachother.
Much like how the HB unit can sound for DI and 2D at the same time.
DSI is (i think) 455 and 800mhz...Reg sonar is 200mhz...
I had the DSI and fish finder / sonar rinning side by side on the con.
I was told to keep the transducer 18" apart.
Worked great.. no problems.
I'm replacing it all with the Gen-2 HDS7 / LSS-1 bundle.
