I just replacd my x 510c with a HDS7.If I tell you I was pleased, I would be lying. I have been trying to set it up and have only been out today, water was muddy. Spent time on the new unit. Forgot manual , left at home, I was lost. I could not get GPS to track my route. There is nothing wrong with the unit. Only my feeble mind trying to set it up.I feel the manual could be more helpful and more self explanatory. If I knew how to use this sonar/ gps I could write a better user manual, too many things not explaned. For instance there is a blinking exclamination box in the lower left corner that I have no idea what it is telling me. I am not giving up..... YET , takes us "OLD GUYS a while to catch on. This thing will do things I never thought of.Any one wishing to offer any tips, I would be thankful.

If restore defaults don't help, do a hard reset.
1. Turn unit off
2. Press and hold the ZIN and Zout keys
3. Press and release PWR key
4. Release ZIN and ZOUT after maps load.
This will delete any saved navigation such as trails and waypoints.

I spent a lot of time on YouTube when I first got mine. They have Snip-It's on each function of the operation of the unit. Get on YouTube and look at Lowrance HDS Unit. Lots of good info. Will help you understand how to set up the unit. Really help me, and I fall into Old Guy Catagory.

You're not alone when trying to figure out the newer units. When I first installed my HDS-8, it reminded me of my first experience with a computer. I've had my unit for just over a year now and know enough about it to be able to go fishing and I'll never use a lot of the features the thing can do. I do plan to try and learn a little more about it over time.
So give it some time, you'll love it once you get familiar with it.

I have a new HDS 7 with StructureScan also. Most of the time I find myself wishing I had my old Lowrance LCX-15M back on my boat. I agree with you, us feeble minded people will be lost with it. I was out on the lake this morning with a "young" man who I paid 20 bucks an hour to tutor me. I was amazed at what he could do with it. He is making me up some cheat sheets which I hope will be more helpful than the instruction book that came with the unit. If and old timer like me were to ask if I would recommend an HDS 7 I would only tell him yes if he says he still has an excellent memory.

I have a new HDS8 GEN 2 and A new HDS7 GEN 2 with Structure Scan. Only been on the water once and I have the 8 pretty much dialed in. The biggest issue is setting up the sonar settings. The Structure scan seems to be fairly close.
