i am considering buying a hds 5x gen2 or a hds 7 gen2. I know the screen on the 7 is larger and has a gps, but I already have a hand held Garmin gps 12. the difference is over $400 bucks. Is it worth it? I may purchase structure scan in the future, but not right now.The unit that I have now is a x 510c. Buying ether of these units will only mean changing out the head I could buy the unit without the transducer but I will not have one to sell with the 510. I like the HDS 5x since it is the same size screen. Can someone with this unit tell me what to expect or how they like this depth finder. Thanks for any comments.

Both units have GPS, no worries there. I started out with HDS 5's. Then upgraded to 7's. In all honsty, I only use the console unit for the GPS, and have my lss-1 ducer on the trolling motor. If I had it all to do again, I would have kept a 5 for the console, and put an 8 on the bow. To me, the screen you'll use the most, should be the biggest. Consider your future plans when purchasing, but either unit will be fine.

Thanks , TheHDS 5x doesn't have GPS . Thats why I am having thoughts about the Gps on the hds7 unit. Can't justify additional cost. Thanks again.

mduncan, I dont know the style of fishing you do but I use the GPS (maps) to stay over the creek channel edges while longlining. I always mark any brush I run over for future reference. About the only time I dont use GPS is when the fish get on the banks. It's not needed then.

If your choices are hds5x or hds7, I'd change to HDS5 or HDS7. A depth finder is a depth finder. Buying HDS5, 7, 8, or 10 is purchasing a system. If you are going to get the LSS-1 then you don't want an X unit.

X2 if cost is issue get HDS5 then add LSS1 later and then you will want GPS. Mduncan can probably answer this if your present ducer will work with the hds5.
