I have down imaging and wish I had side imaging.

I have standard sonar and am satisfied with it.

ok ,i went back and read some of the previous posts.still not quite sure what mikes trying to show here in this picture.i dont think that thats shadows that showing up.im guessing that its noise interference coming from his outboard.heres two pictures that i have with my huminbird 998 at the max. range setting.as you can see theres similar lines, just not as noticeable as on mikes. this is coming from my outboard.this is something that i dont even notice it unless i take a snapshot then view it on my computer, zooming in and out on it. im ok with it
The black bars are shadows. Not anything to do with the motor. You can't get a return and in turn an image for any area that the unit can't see. I believe that is SI 101.

heres another picture showing noise coming from my outboard.once again my 998 was set to max range .at the bottom of the picture you can see were i give the outboard a sudden throttle burst then i backed off the throttle for the remainder of whats being showed in the shot . the noise is very obvious. bi found another picture to add that showing interference from my outboard.in this picture im running 36 mph while sidescanning at about 100ft. the noise from the outboard is obvious .still really no big deal to me just thought that id show the noise that i get.

I voted have down imaging wish I had sidescan. I like DI on transom for idling over creek bends, humps, and other bottom structure looking for wood in these areas. Also good for looking at known spots and looking for fish, to me DI makes it easier to seperate wood/brush from fish on bottom and fish around cover. That said though its not great for covering broader areas on flats, sure I have found some great spots on flats with it, but to me this is where SI shines. I have no use for DI or SI on the bow of my boat though, I want nothing but 20degree 2d on the bow. But all that said, I could get by just fine with 2d, a good lake map, marker buoys, and a handheld garmin. It's all about your budget and how much you anticipate fishing new lakes. You have a great unit in the Eagle Ultra Classic, that whole series of graphs(Eagle Classic, x-65,x-75,x-85) are hard to beat for great value and dependable problem free 2d sonar. I own 3 graphs from this series plus spare xducers and power cables for on down the road as back up.
From the author of the image "Creeped through a rotating train bridge, looks like there is a lot of junk down there" The black bars ARE in fact shadows, which I believe most people recognize. Maybe you can look again Kosmo and Stymie.
Once you use DI for a while, you are able to look at the output and know what it is. Once you have this knowledge, it makes DI that much more useful.
