A regular sonar will not pick up something near bottom unless about 6 inches off bottom. Will DI pick up less than that for fish clinging bottom? I set jig on bottom and lift up till it start showing up on DF which is close to 6 inches. Also ,how do DI draw a picture of a tree standing up right when it is reading straight down and not paraell ?

I'd guess it builds the the image as the beam passes over it. As the tree gets taller, the sonar returns are faster, letting the computer know the height of each branch, then the same as travels away from the brush, Then by some hocus pocus computer program it converts the image from a top view, to a side view.
Got your remote steering for the trolling motor built yet? I have a foot pedal set up for my Powerdrive I-pilot now, and a transducer on it for a new to me bow fishfinder. Only problem is the water is starting to get hard here.
The greater the number of pixels, the smaller the pixels are, so the target seperation is more pronounced (as is the degree of accuracy in the image you see).
Down scan & down imaging units are using a small degree "slice" of underwater objects to make up their screen images. (smaller degree of signal + more/smaller pixels = more accurate image) The return signals are interpreted by the program & displayed on your screen (as interpreted by the strength/weakness of the signal, and the time it takes for those signals to be sent out & return). The program puts together all the info that the returning signals relay, and turns it into a "picture" rendering. You still get a 2 dimensional image ... but, it's more easily interpreted by you, as to what it most likely is, when it's more than just a lot of black squares on the screen (like the first depthfinders were capable of showing).

As for spotting fish with a DI.....they are nearly white on mine...something about the density, but very bright, nonetheless. So if you are on anything but rock, the fish will show up even if they are laying right on the bottom.
Gene, I just got one but haven't used it yet. Check out this video enlarged to full screen. Its pretty good. Fishfinder, GPS Chartplotter | LOWRANCE Elite-5 DSI

Gene .... you can also read thru & follow this thread : http://www.crappie.com/crappie/fishi...rtplotter.html
While it may be exclusive to the Elite 5DSI/Chartplotter unit, it will give you information that can be applied to similar DI units.

I believe the di will do what your asking
