    Default Sonar suggestions

    Hey all,

I have a little bit of money that i received for Christmas and I am looking to try and upgrade my electronics. Right now I have a sonar that is probably about 10 years old so any improvement would be a big one.

Do you guys have any suggestions for a low end fish finder and where the best place to purchase it would be. My budget is probably under 200 dollars unless somebody can convince me that I need to spend that much?

    Thanks a lot

    C

If there is an Academy Sports near you they have an ad in today's paper(Sunday) for a Lowrance Mark 5 DSI for $199 after the $50 mail in rebate. I was looking at this unit earlier and it is $300 in most catalogs and stores.
They have it on sale for $249 and apparently there is a factory rebate of $50 for it also. Good price on a down imaging unit.

One suggestion, Color. Watch for sales at BassPro, Cabelas, Academy. Hummingbird has some discounted and Lowrance has rebates. Should find a very serviceable unit in your price range. Good shopping.

I have the HB PiranhaMax 160. It's only about $100 but does everything I need it to. Dual cone helps it "see" at both narrow and wider angles. It's good at marking fish and their size, although it won't tell me their names or political affiliations like the more expensive units. Structure shows up clearly but it's not sharp enough to know what kind of structure it is (why would I care as long as it has fish?). The display is black and white; color might be nice for the added contrast but that either triples the cost and/or reduces the screen size significantly.

Works for me but I'm a minimal kind of guy.
