Consider getting something small like a riding mower battery. It will keep all of your finder options open but won't take too much space or weigh as much as a full size TM battery. You can even go smaller with a 7ah rechargeable battery commonly used in power back-up units. A low-cost charger would give you all you need to maintain this small battery. I used one of these for quite a while before I got a HB 1197. That thing eats batteries like they're going out of style!

So I've decided on that or a lowrance m68c the one with the gps I really don't wanna spend that much and don't need the gps but I've heard lowrance is better than humminbird but I guess that's the ford chevy argument that will never end what would u guys do for a 14 ft Jon with a 6 hp Johnson and 30 lb troll motor is it worth it to spend more on electronics than I did on the boat

    Rakoprtr,
The (PiranhaMax) 150 is a portable unit and runs on a 12 volt rechargeable battery. Its one of those 7ah batteries that Corker mentioned. Any 12 volt battery will work to power the PMax 150 or any of the PMax units (or most sonar units on the market today).

Since the PMax 150 is a portable unit the transducer is a portable mount as well meaning that it uses a suction cup to mount to the boat. You can buy hardware that will allow permanent mounting to the boat if you want to.

There are other PiranhaMax models to choose from as well as the 300 series units that may be within your price range.

I bought an HB PiranhnaMax 160 Portable (very cool, has a weatherproof carrying case, rechargable battery, base plate, etc) for about $120 on Amazon.com. It does everything I need it to: depth, temp, marks fish of different sizes and is pretty good at showing structure. The 160 version (compared to the 150) is dual beam so it reads a 20-degree cone and a 40-60?-degree cone. Fish marked by the 40-60? cone show up "outlined" on the display (rather than solid) so you know they are more off to the sides of the boat rather than directly underneath. I charged the battery in May, used it 16 hours a week and didn't charge it again until Nov (and even then it only charged for about 30 minutes before reading full charge!)

I fish from a jon boat too. It's kind of a community boat so I need gear that's quick/easy to rig and un-rig. Fits the bill perfectly.

The transducer mounts on the transom. I use the suction cup option so I can pull it off at the end of the day (easier said than done -- you could tow the boat by the suction cup).

There is a HB 565 in the classifieds section that is a solid performing finder. Rugged and reliable.
