The GPS is internal. I like mine but I've upgraded to a bigger screen. My 798 is forsale tho.

I think the 8,9, and 11 series are external gps. At least the ones with DI and SI.

Down imaging shows what's underneath while Side imaging shows you what's side-to-side. Side Imaging will help you find structure faster. Side Imaging units will also have Down Imaging but not vice versa.

Not wanting to hijack your Hummingbird talk but I have a pair of Lowrance HDS units, I luv the things. The place I buy from is Anchor Marine or something like that. They got them on sale now and Lowrance has another $200 rebate on the HDS8 and HDS10. Next year they are comming out with next generation-- so they are getting rid of the left overs. Great units but still pricey. Internal antenna on both. My fishin buddy has a pair of the Hummingbirds and they are awesome also. I have always ran Lowrance units. To each his own. Good Luck.

Yeah, but you have to buy the Structure scan unit to get SI/DI on the HDS units.

Yeah, you have to buy the first unit with structure scan. This includes the structure scan transducer, tansom transducer and Ethernet hub. If you wish to install second unit, you don't buy structure scan bundle, just basic unit and transducer and hook it up to Ethernet. You can then source everything via Ethernet. I am not a lowrance dealer or rep or sales person. I just like the Lowrance setup. It doesn't differ much from Hummingbird. Initial cost for Hummingbird with Side Imaging-Down Imaging is rather steep also. Lowrance just calls it Structure Scan-same thing.
