I bought a sd chip for my humminbird 1197 went out in the garage and put it in, nothing popped up or showed anything? Is it like the built in maps, you have to be on the lake to work?

Did your 1197 unit show any map data? If not than you will either have to pull the boat out of the garage so that it can get a GPS satellite fix before it will show any maps or power the unit on in the Simulator mode to view the map card data.
Also make sure that the area your unit is set to show is covered by the map card. You should be able to go to the Navionics web site and find a listing of the lakes that are covered.
