    Default new unit for bow

i already have a 998 at stering column i am wanting a good gps and overall good 2d unit up front i have decided on either hds 5 or comparible hummingbird. What i was wandering was the 597 0r 698 0r 797 do these unit also have donut issue like my 998 (figured some of yall diehard hummingbird guys would know). I want a good gps so i can stay over brush without a marker. I would also consider a magelan unit if anyone knows any thing about them.

The GPS in all of the Humminbird units should work the same.

If you go with Lowrance, don't get a Elite series. I bought a Elite 5 DSI in January of this year and sold it in the spring. The gps in them is not suited for spider rigging, with mine at anything less than .6-.7 mph the icon repesenting boat location would stop moving. Then when you sped up it would move to the correct position. As a test I marked a way point when I knew the icon was not in the correct location to see if it would mark it at the icon or the actual location. It marked it at the actual location, I tried it several times with the same results everytime. I don't understand how it could mark the way point on the correct spot but the icon be off somewhere else, I guess thats why I'm not an electrical engineer :D.

I you go with a Lowrance, I don't think you can get it to talk with your 998 (i.e., share waypoints). You'd have to download, convert to Lowrance format, then upload to the Lowrance, and vice versa.

Project HB Donut has drifted away...but the fact of lost sales to Lowrance has not....

Sad that HB is still allowing potential sales to go to Lowrance simply because of this (HB) standard round circular boat icon feature that has become known world-wide as the "Donut"...

I'm a Lowrance guy but if I were going to get another unit I would get another unit that was compatible with the unit I already had. (I had the same thought as fished-out)
To be honest, I would stay with Hummingbird they do make some great units. Before I bought something though, after i did my initial research I would try to PM Hummingbird Greg and/or Brian @ BBG Marine with any specific questions I had as to which unit would serve me the best for my needs. Also, I would then ask Brian for a quote Brian has some very competitive prices.
The GPS on the "Birds" and the "Lows" are good to get you in the right neighborhood and maybe even on the on the right block or even to the right street but if I need to get to the right house, I would use my little Garmin E-trex.
