Endo,
That’s a 778c model unit for sure. Made on February 26th of 2010 on manufacturing line 3, being the 417th unit made on that line on that date. Looks like there have been some software updates for your model since it was made too. Not sure if they will help you with dialing your unit in but they should help with the shallow water readings. You will need to use the PC Connect cables to update your unit though (maybe someone you know or a marine sales store has these and will update your unit).
Could you share the menu changes you made here so others that may be searching could benefit from them?
Ok this is what they told me to do. I tried it and seems to be working right now.
1.Change bottom view to whiteline.
2.83khz beam turn down the sensitivity.
3.Surface clutter turn it down.
4.Noise filter go to Med.
5 Sensitivity turn it down
The AS-PC2 lists for about $30 through us but you may be able to beat that price by going to one of the board sponsors. That is the price for the AS-PC2 which has the serial connector. I did not see a listing for the new AS-PC3 which has the USB connector on it. You may want to wait on this version if you do not have a serial port on your computer or else you will have to buy a serial to USB converter cable.

should the transducer make a clicking noise when the unit is on and out of the water?\
This is a normal function.
