I've been wanting one of the new DI units & there was so much useful info on the Elite 5 on this thread, you guys made the descision on Humminbird/Lowrance for me. I've got it installed on the TM & can't wait to hit the water. I really don't believe it will be that useful in the shallow water creeks I normally fish, but should be an asset this winter on the sauger. Especially in the creek mouths dumping into the Ohio river. Can't wait to check it out.

Ran into a bit of a situation : I was told about a website that has coordinates for brushpiles & pallet stacks, on a lake that I fish and am wanting to get to know better. I can load the coords into my E5DSI, manually, without being on the lake. But, when I looked at the website & got the coords, and attempted to put them in ... they were longer than what my depthfinder will accept. The long/lat numbers were 8 or 9 digits long, and my depthfinder will only accept 7 digits max. I tried using the coords, anyway, and dropping the last number(s) ... thinking it would be the same, just not as accurate. WRONG .... when I tried that on my depthfinder, my waypoint icons were popping up 50 miles away from the lake !! So, I figured that there must be more than one "version" of these numbers, and went looking !!

I found a website that converts coordinates. And I figured out why the numbers were longer on the website, than my depthfinder could handle. The website numbers were being expressed in "Decimal Degrees" ... the depthfinder expresses them in GPS numbers. Similar numbers, but not the same ... which is why I was getting the false waypoint readings when I shortened them to fit. The converter allows you to put in whatever version of coordinate numbers ... and translates them to four different versions, with GPS being one of the four. When I convert them over, the maps on both websites show the same location on the lake. I haven't manually added any of them to my depthfinder, yet ... but, feel confident that they will work, and put a waypoint icon where it belongs. I have 72 coords converted, and probably close to 30 more that I have yet to convert.

I did find out the significance of putting the minus sign in the coordinate numbers. See, the first time I punched in the numbers, I left out the minus sign from in front of the Latitude number sequence ... and that waypoint showed up on the map as being in the Mediterranian Sea
But when I added the (-) minus sign in front of the Lat. numbers ... the waypoint showed up on the map exactly where the website map showed it. Lesson learned !!

Just thought I'd pass this along. I hope it helps.

The many new ways of expressing coordinates can be confusing at times, especially to someone (like me) that is used to using UTM or Georef coordinateds. But at least we don't have to convert them from UTM to Georef. (and without a computer)

From UTM coordinates (E, N) to latitude, longitude (φ, λ)First let's compute some intermediate values:
    The final formulas are:

Finally got out & got to try the DI. Easily the most readable fishfinder I've ever used. Balls of baitfish everywhere in the creeks right now. Got to learn a little more about personal preferences/views but I'm liking it.

Finally got around to manually adding a few waypoints from the 100+ that I transcribed into GPS coords. Now all I need to do is go to that lake & see if I can use the E5DSI to find them. It appears, according to my HotSpots map, that most of the brush & pallet stacks were placed in ~15ft of water. That should make them very usable from prespawn to the late Fall feeding binge. Good thinking on the part of the KDFWR !!

DON (AND Bill) .... If I had to use all that gobbledigook to 'sipher GPS coords, I'd go back to a b/w 2d depthfinder and tightlining MINNERS !!

    G'day all

I found this thread by accident while doing a Google search for screen snapshots of structure and fish. I had purchased an Elite 5 DSI to find structure in tidal creeks in the northwest of Australia and the last time I was out I observed a very strange image on my sonar. I read all 27 pages of this thread because I kept on discovering new things about my Elite 5 DSI that I was totally unaware of. I tell you what, FAADAN is right when he says that the User Manual for these things is crappy (pun intended).

Anyway, on post number 103 (I think) there were some images posted and one of them closely matched what I was seeing. I was at anchor and the only movement of my transducer was as the hull of my kayak was gently swinging around in the wind. Right below the transducer I was getting an image of a white sausage shape, about a foot above the riverbed and nestled amongst some Mangrove Tree roots. The sausage appeared to be about five times as long as it was deep. Relating the depth of the "sausage" to the scale the sounder was set to, I deduced that whatever my "sausage" was, it was about 15 centimetres deep, which would make it around three quarters of a metre long. Now that I have read this thread and seen other screenshots I can safely say that I probably had a thumping great Barramundi lounging around under the kayak. Given that I was probably viewing the swim bladder of this fish, it must have been huge.

Barramundi are a warm water species that we fish for from about October through 'til May. They all start out as males and grow to 80 cm, before changing into females. Most people fish for Barramundi, chasing the elusive "metre" fish, though they have been caught as big as 1.5 metres. Barramundi remain in the rivers during the colder months but are very difficult to catch as they go sort of dormant. I think I may have been sitting on top of a lazy one that was just starting to wake up after its winter break. The fish stayed under the boat for the best part of an hour, before moving away.

Our fisheries are very well managed and Barramundi may only be taken if they are longer than 55 cm but shorter than 80 cm, thus ensuring that the boys are old enough to "do the deed" and all of the girls are returned to the water.

Anyway, I digress. The main thing is that I have learned, through this forum, that I can do screenshots myself. So, the next time I see something like this I will be able to post it to this thread for others to learn from. I am now a happy camper and whereas I once had doubts about whether I had done the right thing buying the E5 DSI, I'm now convinced that I have.

    Cheers

    Russ
