I have experienced my unit not wanting to come on, when I have a jumper battery's alligator clips attached to the power cable wires (when playing with the unit in the apartment). A little wiggling of the clips, or unhooking & then reattaching the clips usually works. No such problem when unit is connected when on the boat.

I'd check & make sure I was getting power to the head unit ... check for any corrosion or dirt/film on the connections ... push the "on" button one time quickly, & don't hold it down ... especially check where the power cord connects to the battery. Clean those connections, even if you have to sandpaper them clean & shiny.

If nothing works ... seeing as how it's less than 1yr old, it should still be under warranty. The unit is discontinued, but I'd check with Lowrance & see if you could get retail or pro-rated credit towards another unit (or your $$ back).

I have a stupid question. How do you update the software on a Elite 5 HDI? No usb ports. I'm electronic illiterate.

You use a mini SD card.

Thanks for the responses guys. I have contacted Lowrance via their website, still waiting to hear back from them. In mean time I will check out what you fine folk suggest.

Wayne ... I don't know as any map chip is going to cover all the bayous & rivers in Louisiana, but you can check this link out : http://www.navionics.com/en/webapp .... zoom in on the areas you fish & see if there are any markings that would benefit you.

You also might ask on the Louisiana state forum, and see if anyone has a map chip that shows your areas of interest .. then see if the major chip mfg's have one that will work in your unit.
