455 khz - 455 does better with DI and it gives a wider coverage area. For some reason 800 khz worked better on my 898. So you might have to try both.
Sensitivity -10 which is default. Sometimes I bump it up if bottom is real soft or too dark on the screen
Contrast - 10 might bump it up if bottom is too hard but most the time it stays 10
Sharpness - I usually have this on LOW. It makes the if stick out more but also makes the picture a little grainy. Double edges sword.
Scroll Speed - Set this to equal your MPH or +1 over your MPH. So if you are trolling 2 mph set it at 2 or at 3. Your scroll speed is your MOST IMPORTANT SETTING. I constantly change this scroll speed on the water.
Also set your Down Imaging width to WIDE and I usually bump my sensitivity of the DI up to 12 to 14. The DI sensitivity adjusts DI only so it will not mess up your SI.

Another great trick is to side scan an area with your scroll speed set to your mph or +1... then hit your cursor (one of the left, right, up, down arrow keys) and it will freeze the screen. Then push menu and change your sensitivity, contrast, sharpness, etc.. until the picture looks the best to you on the screen. All those settings will change the image while it is frozen. Once you get the best image just leave it set.

    Hope this helps..

In addition to what DG said....

There are a lot of views available under the "view" tab in your menu... A lot of those you would never find usefull...Select "hidden" for all the views you don't want to see....

Then use the "view" button on the unit to scroll forward thru the available "shown" views... And use the "exit" button on the unit to scroll backward thru the available "shown" views...

Then set your 3 "preset" buttons on the front of the unit to the 3 views that you want the easiest access to ( set a "preset" button by bringing up on the screen the desired view and hold the "preset" button in for 3 seconds until the unit says the "preset" button has been assigned)...

Good info! I too recently bought a 798. I've been playing with it some last weekend and found some of this out on my own but it is great to hear tips from y'all experienced guys. This is my first SI unit and I'm smitten already.

Quick question - How wide do you set your side imaging? The default 150 ft looks pretty good to me, but again I'm still a rookie. Would you get more detail at say 50?

use your simulator at home to give it a test drive and to see how the different settings react.
I wish someone who knew the humminbird side image unit real good could give some hands on classes around alabama

I'm a little confused with this.... My 1197 manual says that the "-10 to +10 " adjustment setting for the 455 kHz beam is ONLY visable when the " transducer select" setting is set to "Quadrabeam"....

Look under your " Sonar" tab for a setting that says "transducer select" and make sure the setting is set to "Hi Def Sidescan" ...

I'm assuming that your unit came with the "Hi Def Sidescan" transducer....

    Then post back...
