Once again I refer to my mentor (CanePole) that has stated many times...


There is no such thing as a "Fish Finder"....

In my opionion....SI and 2/d (and flashers that I have no experience with) are the closest that's ever been developed to ascertain (approximately) where a fish sized return actually is in relation to the xducer....
(and even then.... that return MAY not be a fish)...

Find the structure....any unit...any sonar beam shape...can find structure...

How about yall start a new thread since these lengthy descriptions are hi-jacking the purpose of this thread....

On your topic... Just use the split screen feature of the Lowrance HDS or the Humminbird SI unit so you can see DI, SI, and 2D all at one time. If you are seeing the same fish in 2D and DI then they are pretty much under the boat if in shallow water or inside the cone degree of the 2D. Then look at your SI to tell which side of the boat.. It is that easy...

I'd agree with what you've said here about SI, it certainly measure proximity from the transducer.

It seems that the popular opinion though, is that 2d gives you exact location under the boat, if I'm reading Kosmo correctly.

ok,heres a picture showing humminbird true di and humminbird conventional 2d coverage area . at 100 feet the coverage area of humminbird 455khz true di is 153 feet. a fish could show up on the screen appearing to be beneath the boat when in reality it could be anywere left or right up to 76.5 feet to either side. humminbird conventional 2d sonar using 455 16 degree cone angle would only show fish in a coverage area of 28 feet at 100 feet. thats only 14 feet to either side.fish showing in the di coverage area past that will not show on the 2d. this is the way that i interpret richards theory anyhows.

Looks like you have it right Kosmo. I normally fish 12 foot or less 90% of the year, so I've never really struggled with where something is. If it's a point of interest, you'll normally hover around it anyway and pick it apart. To me DI can tell you if it's worth hitting, because you're able to know exactly what it is at first glance.
