On the 1197si the dark area that is under the boat gets wider as the depth changes. Is this water that is directly under the boat only or is some of this area out to the side of the boat?

They call it the "water column" for some unknown reason. This area changes relative to water depth. If you measured of center of boat to the edge of the water column (dark area beneath and to the sides of the boat icon), it would be the approximate depth of the water. But why bother, that is what the depth reading is for. I just call it the DI zone. I believe this to be the DI coverage area.

A water column is a conceptual column of water from surface to bottom sediments.

1 inch of water column at 4 degrees Celsius equals 249.089 Pascals.
