    Default Rant on electricial wire

I need to rant about the cheesy thin wire that cames with a fish finder. I have an old model Humminbird and the power leads are short. I want to move the finder from the back of the boat (it faces forward now) up front so that I no longer have to sit side ways in the boat. I want to place it so that I can face forward since I use a lot of landmarks as guides when I troll. Line up the cell tower and the white oak and troll. Using the fish finder to stay on top of the hump. With it in the back I'm constantly swivling around trying to keep my bearings. What gauge wire would be suitable for the move? I tried stripping the wire but would only get 4 or 5 strans of usable wire for the connection. I finally just burnt the end of the wires coating off so the I have a good tag end to work with. Need to move the finder about 6 feet..

Without knowing the model of the older Humminbird unit that you have I am just guessing at the wire gauge used in the power cable. If it is the same pc-10 power cable that we use now than it has 22 AWG wire in it. You should use at least a 20 AWG multi-stranded copper wire to extend it.

Good dedicated tools work best for stripping any small gauge wire.

Something like this. Klein Tools Wire Stripper/Cutter - 11046 at The Home Depot I have

My small gauge wire stripper is made by Xcelite, bout the same as this Klein.

I just ran new wire from back of boat to front to power my depth finder. I went with 12 gauge speaker wire 16 ft run. Spliced in power cable solder and heat shrink.

Keep an eye on that wire. It will crack and split in the weather when exposed over time. It is not too weather tolerant.

Thanks CP. I will do that. Ran it inside a piece of gray conduit. What would you recommend for next time?

The fish finder is a 100. Bought it brand new when they first came out. Don't want to change models as long as this works.
