Battery Manufacturers and Brand Names List
My buddy has a 16 ft jon boat with a 25hp johnson electric start and a 24v MK trolling motor...
There is only room in his battery compartment for 2 batteries..
He is leaning toward Everstart from Walmart....
Should he get;
2 deep cycle
1 deep cycle and 1 dual purpose ( if Everstart even makes dual purpose)..
Whats the difference in the Everstart marine battery and the Everstart Maxx marine battery...( if walmart even still carries the Everstart Maxx marine)..
Rickie
dual purpos for cranking and deep cycle for troling motor .the deep cycle depends on how much troling you do
I replace two Optima last November that I had installed when I purchased my boat in 1999. The cost at least twice the price of a regular deep cycle, but the way I figure 3 to 4 times the life (12 yrs.) is worth it. I have an onboard charger and as soon as the boat is put up, I charge them. Also the Optimas charge faster than a standard battey. I tested the batteries on a weekend trip fishing about 3 hours on Friday, 8 hours on Saturday and 4 hours on Sunday. This was done without charging beteeen days. Near the end of the time on Sunday I noticed the trolling motor starting to slow down. Got home @ 2pm on Sunday and put the batteries on charge. By 10 pm my charger showed a full charge.
My charger has a red light and a green light. When first put on charge the red light is the only one on. As the battery is charging and reaches about 50% charged both red and green light are on. From 90 to 100% the green light is the only one on. So, when the green light is on the battery is charged.
interesting..mostly concerned about who makes what battery..
no information about what chargers are used to recharge the batteries..far more important than who makes the battery, assuming the same type. flooded, seal, AGM and such.
does any one use a solar panel on the boat to help recharge the battery while you're using it? I wondering but I haven't spent much time trolling..does the trolling motor get used that much? a 60w panel should put about 3 amps per hour back into the battery..not much but if it left connected to 3/4stage charge controller all the time. the battery remain fully charged until the trolling motor drains it.

If you can afford it, I recomend the Enersys Odysseyin my opinion it is the best trolling motor battery. ODYSSEY Batteries - Marine This is a local manufacture, they make these batteries in Warrensburg Missouri. They buy their lead from mines to the south of there. I've toured the plant and they put a lot of quality into the product, they also make jet and submarine batteries there. Very expensive, but better. Pure lead makes a difference.
Trojan or Hawker Energy (Makers of Trolling Thunder).
Last set of deep cycle batteries I bought only had a year warrenty. I have my boat on the water about 200 days a year. Can't ever remember getting 3 years out of a set, seldom 2. I keep mine full of distilled water and recharge as soon as I back into the garage.
