Sncfrin is 100% correct at least today, but not all plates are the same. Delco used to have a different process whereby they would cast the plates and then stretch them forming what looked like expanded metal with little diamond shaped spaces. Of course they went bankrupt and sold all their equipment to China so I doubt anybody is still using their inferior system today.
As far as Interstate is concerned they are indeed a "Battery Specialist" and not a manufacturer... well almost, anyway. A few years ago Interstate Batteries purchased part interest in BESA (Battery Enterprises of South America) and started importing batteries from Mexico. When you buy a battery today it pretty much takes an expert to ID the maker or even the country where they are made. And yes, Johnson Controls makes batteries for Interstate and also Wal-Mart. Exide made Wally's batteries for several years as well as for Sears and their CEO went to the Federal Penitentiary over the Sears deal.
