Question 24 volt trolling motor question

Dad got ahold of an old aircraft carrier of a bass boat that hasn't been used for years. We got the big motor running and serviced and it works great but, there is a 24 volt motorguide trolling motor that came with it, it wasn't attached and was just laying in the boat. The guy that sold him the boat doesn't know anything about it, it was his deceased fathers boat. We've never had any 24 volts and don't know anything about them.
We don't want to buy another trolling motor if we don't have to and don't wanna have to buy two new trolling batteries just to see if this old one works. Will a 24 volt motor run on just twelve volts??? Just enough to see if it's gonna work.

And how exactley do you hook two twelves together to run a twenty four volt???

Yes it should run off 12V long enough for a test. What model is it? You need to make sure its not a 12/24. If there are just 2 wires going to it (red and black) then chances are its a straight 24V. Hook the batteries up in series. You will need a 50 amp breaker.
