    Default cranking battery question.

I need to purchase a new cranking battery, my question is what is a dual pourpose battery? Can I buy a deep cycle and use it for a cranking battery or is that what the dual pourpose means. Also what do you all recomend as far as what make of battery. Thanks guys.

most use seperate batts for the TM and your big motor. The TM batt is designed to be drawn down over a longer period of time while the cranking batt cannot handle a slow drain as it will kill a cranking batt pretty quick. You can do it for a while but not many trips before it's dead. Just buy the same size/amp/ratings as what you have and you should be good to go. There's lots of discussion about which one is the best, I have used walmart batts, both cranking and TM without issue, just keep 'em watered and charged like any other battery
    GO BIG ORANGE !

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.

Dual purpose is exactly what the name implies. It can be used for starting or a trolling motor.

If the battery has enough CCA for your motor, you can use it whether it's labelled as cranking, deep-cycle or dual purpose.

Deep cycle batteries have a moderate number thick plates to stand up to the constant deep discharge. Cranking batteries have a large number of thinner plates to allow for high current. Larger deep cycles typically have enough CCA for many motors up to 150HP or even more if they aren't HPDIs. A deep cycle or DP as a cranking battery is often the best choice if you run livewell pumps and a lot of electronics.

I use a deep cycle as my cranking battery for the very reasons that CatFan discussed. I have everything hooked to my cranking battery except my TM .

I used a large (used-1 year old) cranking battery for a TM, and found a good deal on a smaller deep cycle for a starting battery. I used the deep cycle to start for six years, and the used cranking battery (used for TM) for four years. They both worked well. Just get one big enough for the job.
