Take your meter and measure between TM batt negative and the crank batt negative with the sonar head unit plugged but no power turned on. You should read near continuity. Unscrew the knurled us2 cable. Check to see that the connection between the TM batt negative and start batt is now open (after you undo the pig tail cable). If you are still reading ground, then you have something else shorting the battery negatives together.
