I have considered the same, SI or DI. How long did it take for you SI guys to get comfortable interpreting what you were seeing?

The main purpose in getting SI is to find more brush/structure. You can find just as much with you present unit as with the DI, You can just see it a little better. with the SI you will find 10 times as much. Save your money until you can get the real deal, SI.

    Tommy, about an hour.
    Good fishing.

DI will show you there is brush in the sonar beam somewhere under the boat's xducer...

SI will show you which side of the boat it is on......

When I got mine, I went by known laydowns and bridge pilings and such to see what they looked like. A week later, I went on a camping/fishing trip. I felt comfortable with it. You will learn more and more as you use it. I'm still learning. I do take less snapshots and recordings than when I first got it though.
And trust me, it will change the way you fish.

Well when I first got my 1197 the DI upgrade was not out, I really liked the SI, but I fish standing timber most of the time and you can't run at the speed needed for SI So when DI came alone I upgraded and I love it for the way I fish. But when looking for open water fish and cover you can't beat the SI. :D

is it easy to differentiate between baitfish/schools of fish/ and structure? I fish lakes with open water and some with alot of underwater strumps. Would SI be the way to go or DI? Or do I need to pony up for all 3- 2D/SI/DI?
Also, what does the " peak-to-peak" watts mean. most everything id 4000 until big money then its 8000watts? is it that important to shuck out that much money?

Telling cover from bait balls is real easy, I still have trouble telling fish schools from bait balls. But with HB if you go SI you get all three. Thumbs Up

So if I get Side imaging unit, it will have down imaging capabilities? So the 798 ci HD SI will have DI and then be able to adjust screen for all 3 (2D/SI/DI) or would I have to go up the 898c SI unit?
