Default Looking to upgrade I think!

I am looking to upgrade/add to my boat another fishfinder. I currently have an Eagle fishmark 320 which serves me well but you know how we guys are, I want a new one! I don't need one of the biggest and best, just a nice upgrade. I have been reading and trying to figure out what I want and have confused myself. Should I look more at a unit that has down or side imaging or one of the HD units? My thought on HD is that what i have been looking at on the 320 will just be in color and look a little sharper while the imaging units look more picture like. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Color is a bigger deal than you might think. I was skeptical at first that it amounted to anything, but it is certainly worthwhile. Your basic choices are a conventional 2D sonar, a down-imaging sonar or an HDS/LSS system that has both 2D, DI and structure scan.

Lowrance has the Elite and Mark series with conventional or DI, in mono or color to look at Fishfinder, GPS Chartplotter | LOWRANCE Mark or the HDS series for the structure scan.

One thing to consider is this. You could buy an HDS-5 right now, then if you decide later to add the LSS-1 for down and side imaging, no problem. This will allow you to buy what you need right now, add what you want later. There are other components you can add to the HDS network also.

Yes, the color unit will do a better job showing you whats down there, and the HDS will do a much better job. Once you add the LSS-1, you'll be introduced to a whole new way of finding fish and structure. It's fantastic.

In my shopping around I ran across the Humminbird 788ci HD DI combo unit. Seems like a pretty nice upgrade, about what im looking for. Checked BPS and Cabelas and they both have it for 799. Looked on ebay and I can get it new in box for 588 plus free shipping. Does anyone have one and if so, whats your thoughts? I appreciate all the info from you guys and have been trying to read up on all the different units and bells and whistle to try to decide just what it is i really need and will use.

You have to keep in mind that all the Humminbird DI units have 2D sonar and DI. The 2D sonar will be a plus if you want to drop shot.

Thanks for the info Joby. NOW if somebody only knew if BPS was going to activate there 6 payment plan anytime soon! That way I could just go ahead and get the big unit (which ever that is) that I REALLY want to get and just be done with it!! I just hate to depart with all that money at once.....
