I am going to get either a Lowrance Elite 5x down imaging or a Hbird 596 down imaging. I can't uderstand why Lowrance would come out with this unit without 2d sonar but Hbird has 2d sonar and down imaging. I would think the 2d would be a must in locating suspending crappie away from structure. I am torn and trying to find information but haven't got many beneficial responses. Hopefully we will with your post!!!

Have you used DI yet? It will make perfect sense why you don't need 2d on a unit. In fact I'd be shocked if you'd ever use 2d again. I won't! The Other great thing about Lowrance is the Free software Updates. Typically at least once a year they will come out with a new version of the software that will add or enhance features. This has always been, and will continue to be FREE. You can't beat that.

You'll love DI, and 2D is pretty much dead.

I can help with questions about the Humminbird 596c HD DI unit.
With the two DI sonar beams (45 degree beam at 800kHz and 75 degree beam at 455kHz) you are not looking at a very large area front-to-rear, so if you are on top of structure you may not see the crappie that are for/aft of the transducer. With the 2D sonar though you have your choice of using one of two beams or a combination of both (16 degrees at 455kHz and 25 degrees at 200kHz) and these are circular in shape and so should be able to show crappie over a larger area.
