If they are the same models HB, or the program chip is compatible with both units, you only have to buy the one chip.
Check on Ebay for you spend the 200. I Just got a new navionics hot maps 3000 chip for my hand held for $24.50
Hope this helps

If I have two Humminbird units on my boat one up front one on the bow and I want to update the maps can I use the same chip and download/update the new maps to each unit or do I have to buy two chips one for each? Never updated my maps and they are two years old and I was told that you should update them every year? The chips are like 200$ a piece I don't wan to have to buy two or should I just stick with the maps loaded on my units?

I don't know if you can "update" the maps in that way. I asked the question "do you have to have two chips for two ff with an interlink, or will one chip map installed show up on both units?" and it sounds like I do have to have chips for each. So, if that's the case, then I think whichever unit you would have the new chip installed that's the only one that would display the new map. I also don't think it would show the new info after the chip was removed. I may be wrong, but that's the way I understand it. Otherwise, you could buy a chip this year, I could install it and uninstall (updating my info on my unit) and then I could buy one next year and you could borrow it (updating your info). That would be too handy for us, and cut Navionics out of half their sales (theoretically).
I have a HB 788 interlinked to a 998 and they only share route and waypoint info, they do not share map info, I wish they did. I just bought a second Navionics chip so I don't have to swap them out.

I have two 898's one on the bow and one on the console, they both have the Navionics that was installed from the factory so I have never "upated" or anything I don't know if you put in a chip and download or if the new maps only work while the chip is in....... I just looked at my unit I guess that is why we have two SD card slots on the units WHAT A SCAM.
Oh and they are not linked they are two complete separate units one on the transom and one on the trolling moter.
Powertroll,
The mapping companies would not like it if you could use one mapping card in more than one unit at a time. So you would have to buy two map cards if you want the new maps on two units at the same time – no map sharing allowed.

With my Ethernet connection on home computer, I can share any memory location on any computer hooked to the Ethernet. I know they could share mapping. Everything on our units has an IP and a MAC. Oughta be able to hook in my laptop and use it too, but no. Greedy Bee's.
