Default thoughts on 858 on the bow?

Does anyone have this setup? I am looking at a 858 for my bow unit and linking it with my 997 on my console. I will also get a HDSI ducer for it even though it doesnt do SI/DI, but this way i can switch it out with my 997 if i want that on the bow for slow trolling. any thought? good or bad....thanks...also if you have a 858 you may be interested in selling in the future let me know...i am in no rush to make a purchase

don`t know much about the 858,but at the moment i have a 997 on a ram and bought extra ducer, power wire ,cable collector, and an extra ram base so i can move it back and forth until i can find a good deal on a used 898 or 997 where i don`t have too.

I run an 858 on the bow of my Ranger. It was a nice upgrade from the 788 I ran in 2009. Looking forward tying this unit to my 1198 (just arrived!) by ethernet!

Connecting with ethernet? Is that the same as using interlink? If not, what is the advantage? Will you be able to view the 1198 info on the 858?

Shine runner: Ethernet networking is new for 2011 Humminbird units as well as some ethernet-equipped legacy units. It allows waypoints, routes, and sonar information to be shared between networked units. The 858 will not display SI and DI data collected by the HDSI transducer that is powered by the 1198, but it will display 2D data collected by that transducer. Two SI/DI units will be able to share all sonar data (SI/DI/2D).

jsplinter: I use the flasher for vertical jigging in rivers in the winter. I enjoy the real time feedback, which enables me to interact with and react to individual fish that are giving my presentations the once-over.

I did get your PM on Walleye Central. Unfortunately, I don't have anything available at this time. Sorry!

Jason, I heard the 997 is getting an update sometime in the begining of next year to make it ethernet capable also is this true?

The 997 does not have the hardware to be able to do the job. The 998 has the ethernet port, and it, like other ethernet-capable units, will get a software update after the first of the year to make them ethernet ready.
