I had the same problem and it was a partially melted fuse in the fuse panel. you might want to check that.

Same thing used to happen with my HB's all the time. I sold the boat, gave away the HB's with the boat. Replaced the boat, and bought Lowrance HDS units for the new boat.
May have been a bit of an over reaction on my part, but had to justify buying a different boat/electronics.
Bad, dirty, corroded or loose wiring connections cause more problems on a boat than anything else.
That's for sure! I use the same Humminbird and Garmin on 2 different boats. One boat I'll have the shut off due to starting the engine with the H/B, and one I won't. I know it's a bad connection somewhere, as my Garmin and H/B unit show 2 different voltages on the boat with the start up failure. Too dang cold now to fix it.
I'm still having problems. My lowrance will restart while the motor is off every now and then. My new VHF I just installed will say high voltage when I rev up the big motor. Both are straight wired to the cranking battery.
My cranking battery is five years old. Should I try a new battery first?
Five years is kinda old for a boat battery.
yep 5 YEARS . i never run anything on my cranking battery . one time i had to switch the finder to cranking becouse the TM was interfearing with the bow mount finder
Yea, I would say battery. But I always wire my devices to the battery with an in-line fuse for that device. Each device has it's own power feed. Works for me with none of the above problems. I also wire all devices to the starting battery.
I have mine fused the same way.
