Smile motorguide foot control trolling motor??

I bought the motor and the shaft is too long. Control box is too high and in the way of fishing. My question is can you cut the shaft or is it best to just have a new shorter shaft installed?

I don't know about Motor Guide , but I've shortened several Minn-Kota shafts .Be careful you don't saw the wires off.

remove the one screw. Cut the to length. Be careful not to cut the wires. install the head and drill a screw hole. Simple task.

Default Is the Motorguide shaft metal?

If the shaft is metal it is threaded at both ends and if you cut it, you will need to rethread the end. I found it was cheaper to buy another shaft. The rethreading die was more expensive than the shaft. So, hope this helps. Other than than, don't forget the heat shrink and solder and you're done.
