Let me start by saying that none of us (Dynamic Trio) claim to be experts. We went out with a common sense approach to these tests. In other words, we turned the things on. We could care less about personal favorites and have no intention of advising about what to buy or which is best.
Test Targets
We tied buoy markers to 4 coffee can condos (CC) and dropped them in a 20 foot square pattern in about 12 foot of water. This pattern allowed us to approach the targets at almost any angle. After tests on the CC, we dropped the Bucket Condo (BC) int the center of the CC square. This made targeting the BC easy. We used the trolling motor for propulsion and speed ranged from 1-2 mph.
Side Scan Results (factory default)
We made several passes (20 -40 feet distance) at the CC using side scan before we placed the BC in the water.
Neither unit displayed the CC targets.
Our conclusion was: if you didn't know the CCs were there, you would not see them on either SI. We didn't try tweeking anything as pretended we didn't know that the targets existed.
Down Imaging Results (optimum settings)
Couldn't really get good results on the HB until I turned the 2D sonar off.
HB coffee can condo after 2D off
Bucket condo
We couldn't do a lot of testing due to the weather. We had rain, wind, humidity to contend with. We had a busy 2 days and enjoyed every moment.
Conclusion
Either unit can find stuff. It is up to you to learn how to use your equipment.
I had to do a lot more tweeking with the HB than the HDS to get similar results.
The HB menu is easier to use.
The HDS gives better definition.
GPS speed was measured by my Garmin, not these units.
For you doubters and know-it-alls:
There is a CC in West Sandy in 12 foot of water with a number on it. Go find it and I will pay you 100 dollars American for this particular condo when you deliver it.
We will continue tests at a later date.
