I have been having a very tough time figuring out my 798. Based on these results I am wondering how in the heck I am going to ever find fish? Currently I use the fish ID option. Do you think I should turn it off? Also, thanks very much for doing the test and posting your results.

If in shallow water (15 or less feet)Turn on gray color if in sunlight. put sidescan to left or right side. put distance to 50-75 feet. put chart speed at 2. Run at about 2mph (idle) with big motor. Make adjustments wit SI sensitivity. The higher the sensitivity, the more crap shows up. You will find stuff if it is there. It takes practice.

These are ballpark settings that work for me. Good starting point.

If you want purdy pictures to "brag" about, get in deeper water, find big objects, and turn the sensitivity way down. Looks really impressive.

The side image views on the hb look like you've got some kind of interference going on. Does it always have the horizontal white lines in the si view? I see those occasionally on my 998.

If you look at pictures from both units, they appear to have the same
"interference" I would tend a guess that both units were working at their full potential. If anyone can run anything electrical to it's limits, I'd say it's CP.

If that's the full potential of the 997 then the 998 was a definite improvement. I get much better pics from mine.

Here's some pics of some stake blocks I made. 8" cinder blocks with 2-1/2" oak stakes anywhere from 2-4 ft long (hardwood flooring scraps).

And another pic of some tires someone threw out.

These pics are in pretty shallow water, and none of the horizontal white lines.

The last was a boat I found last Sunday in deeper water. This last pic is from Humviewer.

I got some pvc out with a number on it. Come find it with your 998. 100 dollar reward for the retrieval.
