Default 1197 shallow depth (under 5 ft ) readings

The bottom readout display of my 1197 seems to have problems showing depths shallower than around 5 ft. Below 5 ft, I have to watch the 2d or down image screen to see the proper depth. Below 5 ft, the depth display seems to jump around, and most often will show like .7 .

I have tried adjusting the surface clutter setting to no avail.

Anyone else have this problem and solved it? I have the 4.750 version of software on the machine.

On my 997si I noticed the last time out that when I was in less then 5 feet of water my depth was off. The depth would say 5 feet but the graph showed 2.5 feet , The graph was correct. This is the first time I have noticed this in 2 seasons of running this unit. I did just down load the update for DI a few weeks ago. Could there be something with this current download. I believe its update 4.750

I've only had mine a couple months and went directly to version 4.750....so didn't actually test it with the older version of the software. I have been reluctant to try reloading old version and testing. I would think humminbird would test this if enough people are experiencing the same issue.

I have noticed this problem. My 1197 is doing the exact same thing as Xhogger.
I feel a little better, I was thinking it was my transducer.

We have been testing for this. Unfortunately this is not reproducible on all lakes in shallow water and so have had to get some feedback and sonar recordings from some who are experiencing this. Not sure when anything will be available but in the mean time try this:
    - Make sure all other sonar units are off. Reset all the menus back to the factory settings using the Restore Defaults menu. Than go in and set the Water Type menu to the “Salt (deep)” setting and the Surface Clutter to 9.

You can also try loading an older software version as well. If you do not have the *.bin file for this you can get it off of the SideImagingSoft.com web site, from the Humminbird Customer Resource folks or by direct e-mailing me (I will be out of town this weekend).

Just to let everyone know , this is the only sonar unit on the boat. Also this problem is not boat specific because my unit goes on two different boats with same result. So i think power source can be eliminated. I use the same transducer , and gps puck for both boats. I bought an extra power cord so a power cord stays with each boat.

Its reproducible...come get in my boat and you can see it all the time.
If I get in 5'-0" or less it jumps around constant. go to 6'-0" works like a charm

Just tried what Greg suggested with restoring and deep salt water settings.
My unit went from reading 1.1 feet in the shop to reading 17.9 to 18.0 feet. That didn't seem to help. Anybody have anymore thoughts ?

    Cracker68,
I meant that it is not reproducible on all lakes. Where you are has some special bottom composition or something that is triggering this. Go to another lake and it may not do this. Is there any chance that you could make a sonar recording and send it in to us? If so please call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks at 1-800-633-1468 as they should be able to tell you how to get the sonar recording to us.

Xhogger you need to test it on the water not in the air.
