Thread: thru hull SI

I have 797SI and It is mounted in the rear. I know you are having problems with to motor in the way but you might be loosing out if you do it you way. I can mark the leaves on the surface with mine. I f you have ribs on the bottom of your boat they can block it also. I am just saying the it may be better to tilt the motor up a little to clear it. You drill that hole and it is there and that will cost to repair if it don't work. Another thing I beleive those are made for larger boats of fiberglass and wood. I know aluminum flexs when hitting wave. I may not break off but could crack the epoxy resin and sealent and start leaking. Hate drilling any hole in a boat. Eric

The XPTH-9-HDSi-180-T or Plastic Thru-Hull High Definition Side Imaging transducer has a steel insert in the shaft of the transducer. Not saying that they cannot be broken but that it may take a little bit to do so. These things are also pretty expensive more so than the CSi transducer that came with the 798 unit. I would start by looking at correcting the trolling motor noise interference first as it may still be there regardless of what Thru-Hull transducer you do or do not install. Call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks at 1-800-633-1468 and ask them about a trolling motor interference kit for your 798 unit.

Once you have the trolling motor interference sorted out you can work on getting Si readings from both sides of your boat. I would start by seeing if you can tilt the trolling motor up a bit to allow clearance for the Si beam as Eric stated. If you cannot tilt it up far enough you may want to consider installing a second Si transducer on the other side of the trolling motor and using an AS-Si-LR-Y cable to connect both to your 798 unit – which may work as well but be less expensive than the Thru-Hull HDSi transducer and you won’t have to drill that big hole in your hull.


Eric3338, Try installing a prior (older) software update in your unit than download a fresh copy of the current software for your unit and re-install it. Be sure to reset the menus to the factory defaults before and after each installation of software.

To give you an idea of what I am dealing with, this is the boat I use it on. No waves to hit, I am in ponds. In Humminbirds defense, I am using this 798 in a fashion it was not really meant, I have made it portable. Easy on easy off the boat. This thru hull transducer will stop that for sure, (it will be more permanent) but I just cant seem to find the right spot doing it the way I am doing it now so....

As far as repairs or holes, not really worried about that. I own a boat company and built this boat so welding up a hole if the transducer doesn't pan out wont be an issue. I am just looking for something that works better.

Reloading the software again was for Eric3338. We have found that sometimes something does not go right with the software updates and reloading a new copy of it can sometimes help. Could be a problem with the file transfer over the internet, the memory card used or who knows what. You cannot simply load the same software version again so we have them load an older version and than the current version to get around this.

Just a thought but you only use on ponds that can change everything. mount it on the front. I wish mine was there. By the time you figure out what you a looking at you in the back of the boat can drop a marker right on it. with it on the rear of the boat you are already 10-15' past it. youo loose all interference from the motor also. eric
